How to Read FMGE Pass-Rate Data (Without Being Misled)
Pass-rate numbers are easy to misread. A headline percentage on its own tells you very little — what matters is the sample behind it and how stable it is over time. Use these checks before letting any single figure drive your university choice.
Check how many candidates appeared
A 100% pass rate from 2 candidates is statistically meaningless. A 35% rate from 300 candidates is far more reliable. Always read the pass rate alongside the "appeared" column, and be sceptical of extreme highs or lows built on tiny batches.
Look at the trend, not one year
A single strong year can be a fluke. Universities that hold a consistent rate across multiple sessions are a safer bet than one with a single spike followed by a collapse. Prefer multi-year consistency over a one-time peak.
Remember pass rate reflects the cohort too
A university's pass rate is shaped by the students it admits and how hard they prepare, not only by teaching quality. Strong self-study and coaching can lift your odds well above your university's headline figure — and weak preparation can sink them below it.
Confirm the source and the year
Only trust figures traceable to official NBE/MEA reports for a stated session and year. Marketing brochures often quote rounded, undated or cherry-picked numbers. When in doubt, treat unverifiable claims as marketing, not data.
Common FMGE Preparation Mistakes to Avoid
A Realistic Mindset
- The national pass rate is roughly 15-20% — treat the exam seriously, not casually.
- There is no attempt limit, but each attempt costs time and money; aim to clear early.
- No sectional cutoff exists — only the aggregate 150/300 matters, so don't over-invest in one subject.
